Day 1

Fly from Johannesburg airport (JNB) departing at 10:10am (1pm flights may be available on Monday and Wednesday) arriving at Maun airport (MUB) at 12:10pm.  Your driver will be there to transfer you to your lodge, Planet Baobab.  The journey will take three to four hours, likely with some wildlife along the way.  If you arrive in time you can join a Baobab bush walk and have a sundowner drink.

· Note this itinerary can be customized and extra days can be added.

Wet Season (November 1st to April 24th)

· Day 2 will not have quad biking.  There will be a village and cattlepost visit,  meerkat encounter and salt pan visit, then overnight back at the lodge.  Day 3 has breakfast, then another meerkat encounter.

· Pricing is $15 less per person than the dry season.

· Migration option– stay an extra night and experience the spectacular migration of zebra and wildebeest in Makgadikgadi National Park.  An additional $275 per person sharing.

Included:

· Ground transfer between Maun airport and lodge.  This can also be arranged for Kasane and Francistown as well.

· Two cooked breakfasts, one lunch, two dinners. Beverages while on safari.  Vegetarian friendly options are available.

· Two morning meerkat encounters, quad biking (dry season only, possibly shared by two people unless you pay a supplement), and accompanying guides.

· One night in the lodge, one night sleeping out at the salt pans.  In wet season this is two nights in the lodge.

· Air Botswana schedule is at this link.  From the U.S. they can be reached by phone at 1-800-518-7781.

· Flying into Maun will be your best bet.  If those flights are not available there are Joburg to Kasane flights MWF 11:30-13:50, and Joburg to Francistown Tue/Thu around 14:00 (return flights on those same days).  There are also daily Gabarone to Maun flights.

Notes:

· ALL ACTIVITIES ARE WEATHER PERMITTING AND CANNOT BE GUARANTEED.

· Sunglasses are recommended for quad biking. Optional would also be ear plugs or a filter or kerchief to avoid dust.

· Be sure to carry a warm jacket and dress in layers, the mornings and evenings can get very chilly. And for any journey a rain jacket or poncho is always advisable.

· Wear long pants and sturdy shoes, as when you are looking for the meerkats there is scrub brush around that could be uncomfortable brushing against skin.

· Remember to carry your passport.

This trip can also be combined with other Southern Africa tours, please enquire.

Day 2

Have an included hot breakfast, then drive out about an hour to where you will find a family of habituated meerkats likely looking for brunch.  This will be a unique and unforgettable experience!

At the lodge there is a pool, or meet other guests at the bar before enjoying a Braai (Botswana BBQ) three-course dinner.

Rooms are spacious and very comfortable.

Day 3

Breakfast then quad bike out to a different meerkat site, and see an ancient baobab tree before heading back to the lodge.

Any “Meerkat Manor” fans out there?  I discovered the show while researching my first trip to Botswana and fell in love with them, but unfortunately didn’t get to see any on that journey.  In 2009 I was contemplating a trip to Namibia, so I had to fly through Joburg  which is right next to Botswana...then I spotted a picture of a meerkat actually standing on top of a person’s head.  WOW, if that is real, I had to get there!  Well, it is.

On this trip you too will get to interact with meerkats that live in the wild, but are habituated to humans– what a concept.  I was smiling ear to ear the whole time they were around me.  And a major bonus– quad biking through the salt pans turned out to be exhilarating, and sleeping under the stars magical.

Detailed Itinerary (for the dry season)

You will have a picnic lunch, then return to the lodge to head out with other guests for your thrilling quad bike ride across the Ntwetwe salt pans and to your camp for the night.  I venture to say that the stars will be an incredible sight.
