Day 3 Sossusvlei

Today will be a photographer’s dream.  Take a morning flight south to the Sossusvlei area, one of the most spectacular sights in Namibia.  Here you will get to view the oldest desert in the world, with some of its largest sand dunes as well.  You will have time to climb a large dune or two, before making your way out to the Dead Vlei for a unique, incredible photographic opportunity.

Fly back to Swakopmund, where you will again get spectacular views of this country from above.

Day 1 Fly to Walvis Bay, then Etosha

Fly from South Africa to Walvis Bay, on the west coast of Namibia, arriving early afternoon.  You will be met at the airport, drive a few minutes north to a small airstrip, and then take your small plane flight north to Etosha National Park.  Etosha, meaning "Great White Place", was declared a National Park in 1907 and is one of Southern Africa's finest and most important game reserves.

I consider Etosha to be a more relaxing safari experience well suited for the veteran safari person or someone looking for a more laid back experience.  You don’t have to drive around in a vehicle all day, I would recommend the fantastic game viewing which can be done 24hrs a day at the floodlit watering hole right at your lodge, or game drives can be done that primarily seek out various watering holes around the park.  I enjoyed seeing large groups of animals gather, and also multiple species being together and the interaction and dynamic that occurs.  You will see lots of elephant, zebra, giraffe, and this is a great place for rhino.  Not as many cats here, although I did see some lions.

Your room is a permanent structure that is very well appointed, modern in an African style, and comfortable:  AC, fridge, down comforters, rainfall showerhead with river rock tiling… The lodge also has a restaurant and pool, and is actually inside the park.

Namibia is a beautiful, but large and desolate, country that usually takes weeks to go through.  Now you can see the highlights in only five days by using a small plane to save days of road travel.

You will experience the highlights:  view game at Etosha National Park, climb sand dunes and have fantastic photo opportunities at Sossusvlei, go on a desert safari, and partake of adventures in the beach town of Swakopmund.

Spend most of the day at Etosha observing animals at the lodge watering hole, or you can take an optional morning game drive.

Day 4 Swakopmund

From 8am to 1pm go on a desert safari– the “Living Desert” tour.  This is a 4x4 adventure through the dunes where you will track and find the hidden life in this seemingly desolate, but amazing landscape.  You’ll likely see the Palmato Gecko, sidewinder, sand diving lizard, chameleon, scorpions, insects, and other desert creatures.

The rest of the day is free.

Day 5 Swakopmund/fly out

In the morning go quad biking!– after the safety briefing, professional guides will lead you toward the dune belt.  The beginning of the trip is easier riding that gives you time to get used to the bikes. After a well earned break when complementary refreshments are offered, we start the exhilarating passage through the dunes towards the western side. The stark and savage beauty of the dune belt is captured in the
2 hour trip on our way to the "Sunset Dune". The view over the Atlantic Ocean is stunning and offers spectacular photo opportunities.

However about 40 minutes in we stop for Lie-Down Sand boarding. Out comes the "high tech" boards, some last minute waxing might be needed and then you blast off down the dune.  "Our" dune is safe and easy but can still provide quite a ride and offer splendid opportunities to get really "close to the desert" . . . After sand boarding it's back on your bikes and another hour of quad biking.

At the end of the day you will fly southwest back to the coast and check into your hotel at Swakopmund, where you will spend the next three nights.
Your hotel, the Swakopmund Guesthouse, is a five minute walk from the beach and main shopping area.  Breakfast here is included.

Swakopmund is a small, walkable town and is Namibia’s premier holiday resort.  There are numerous restaurants and bars to choose from.

Transfer back to Walvis Bay airport for your early afternoon flight out.
