Polar bears can be seen on Barter Island which is a part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the North Slope Borough.  The village of Kaktovik lies on Barter Island in the Arctic Ocean.  Of its 256 people, most are Inupiat Eskimo, the only indigenous people of this land, and to that end help define this place, along with the air, sea, mountains, tundra and wildlife.

How to get to Fairbanks:

Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) has direct flights from Anchorage, and is also sometimes served from Vancouver and Seattle. Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air and Era Aviation serve Fairbanks year round and are the primary air carriers. Delta Air Lines and Frontier Airlines operates in Fairbanks though their service is seasonal.

As weather can be very foggy on Barter Island at this time of the year, you need to spend at least one night in Fairbanks before leaving. If due to fog/weather your flight cannot leave that day, you will need to spend an extra night in Kaktovik and may return to Fairbanks only the following afternoon. Please take this into consideration when booking your flight out of Fairbanks.
