Another unique, world-class wildlife experience.  Probably the best and easiest place in the world to swim with whale sharks, as they are right at the surface, moving relatively slow, and easy to locate.  It is an intense and absolutely fun experience to be swimming in the water next to a shark the size of a bus!

Convenient to get to from the U.S., Isla Mujeres itself it a great place to relax with fantastic white sand beaches, a laid back atmosphere, and good restaurants.

About whale sharks:  a slow moving filter feeding shark, it is THE largest living fish species. They grow up to a length of 41ft and a weight of more than 21 tons, but unconfirmed claims report considerably larger whale sharks.  The shark is found in warm oceans and lives in the open sea with a lifespan of about 70 years.  The species originated about 60 million years ago. Although whale sharks have very large mouths, they feed mainly on plankton, microscopic plants and animals.

How to get to Cancun:

Cancun’s airport (CUN) has service from most major air carriers in North, Central, and South America.

If already in Belize City, you can take a 20 minute flight from the Belize City Municipal Airport (TZA) using Maya Island Air or Tropic Air to either island.
Or for a less expensive option you can also take a ferry from the water taxi terminal (about an hour, $20) or private boat.

Take advantage of being right on the best beach on the island, Playa Norte, and its beautiful sunsets.  The waters are calm and blue, and there are several good restaurants and bars to walk to, or you can rent a golf cart to explore more of the island.

Day 2

It is a short walk from the hotel to the dock, where around 7am you’ll head out on the adventure of a lifetime!  After about an hour you’ll be at a spot where there will likely be multiple whale sharks swimming right on the surface.  You will slide into the water two people at a time with your guide to swim alongside these prehistoric marvels.

Above the surface...

,,,under the surface.

Return to Isla Mujeres by 2 or 3pm.  Take the ferry to Cancun and then be transferred back to airport or hotel at prearranged time.

You will likely have multiple opportunities to go in the water.  On my second time in below I happened to drop in right in front of one!  No problem, he just scooted to the right and swam by me.  Fantastic!

On the way back to the island you may have time for a snorkel stop as well.
